Chapter 9
Present
Pulling up to the mall, Kendra and Linda began the search for a parking spot, which didnât take long, since the mall would be closing soon. âSo did you speak with Ray tonight? Howâs he doing?â Kendra asked.
âHe didnât call yet. I got tired of waiting.â Linda said, semi-irritated.
They both exited the car and Kendra paused, thinking of the correct way to approach the situation. âWow, this job sure is keeping him occupied.â
Linda smirked. âHe didnât call the last time, either.â
Kendra already knew that, but she didnât react. âIs he okay? I mean, is he just really busy?â
âI guess so. But who knows, maybe heâll call while Iâm gone. I left my laptop open at Markâs house.â
That was another issue that bothered Kendra. âDoes Ray know that youâve been over at Markâs a lot?â
âYeah.â She looked at Kendra. âWhy? Do you think itâs wrong?â
âI donât think itâs wrong, but maybe Ray does.â
âHe hasnât said anything. I can tell when Ray is upset and heâs not. He gets along well with Mark, and I think he actually appreciates the fact that you guys are all taking turns looking after me. I feel a little too needy at times, but whatever, Iâm pregnant.â
âIâm needy, too.â Kendra concurred. âI sent Ian out at midnight last night to get me chocolate ice cream.â
Linda laughed. âI think heâs okay with everything. I think heâs just working his butt off so he can come home. He doesnât even really text me anymore.â
Kendra wasnât aware of that. It left her with an uneasy feeling in the pit of her stomach. âReally? It takes like two seconds to send a text.â
âI know. Like I said, heâs busy. I think heâs just going to come home one day and surprise me.â
âYou think so? You mean, like, heâs going to wrap up this job and come home for good?â
They approached the mall entrance. Linda opened the door and let Kendra go in first. âWell, ya. Doesnât that sound like Ray to you?â
âSure.â And it did, although, with Ray leaving despite Lindaâs pregnancy, it seemed he was veering away from his usual behaviour.
âI need maternity pants. â Linda said, on the lookout for the nearest maternity store. âAnd probably underwear, too.â
âSame here.â Kendra walked next to her. âI think Thyme Maternity is just around the corner here.â This was the first time shopping for maternity wear for both of them. They managed to stay in their regular clothes up until now.
âOh, here it is.â They both said in unison.
âSo, has Mark likeâ¦.â Kendra treaded carefully. âput the moves on you or anything?â
Linda frowned and shook her head as she searched through a table filled with maternity pants. Kendra looked as well, but on the other side, for a different colour. âNo, not at all.â She guffawed. âBelieve me, heâs got enough women in his life.â Linda explained about the various womenâs items sheâd found in his house previously. âHe doesnât need to hit on me; he can get any woman he wants.
