Chapter 9

Present

Pulling up to the mall, Kendra and Linda began the search for a parking spot, which didn’t take long, since the mall would be closing soon. “So did you speak with Ray tonight? How’s he doing?” Kendra asked.

“He didn’t call yet. I got tired of waiting.” Linda said, semi-irritated.

They both exited the car and Kendra paused, thinking of the correct way to approach the situation. “Wow, this job sure is keeping him occupied.”

Linda smirked. “He didn’t call the last time, either.”

Kendra already knew that, but she didn’t react. “Is he okay? I mean, is he just really busy?”

“I guess so. But who knows, maybe he’ll call while I’m gone. I left my laptop open at Mark’s house.”

That was another issue that bothered Kendra. “Does Ray know that you’ve been over at Mark’s a lot?”

“Yeah.” She looked at Kendra. “Why? Do you think it’s wrong?”

“I don’t think it’s wrong, but maybe Ray does.”

“He hasn’t said anything. I can tell when Ray is upset and he’s not. He gets along well with Mark, and I think he actually appreciates the fact that you guys are all taking turns looking after me. I feel a little too needy at times, but whatever, I’m pregnant.”

“I’m needy, too.” Kendra concurred. “I sent Ian out at midnight last night to get me chocolate ice cream.”

Linda laughed. “I think he’s okay with everything. I think he’s just working his butt off so he can come home. He doesn’t even really text me anymore.”

Kendra wasn’t aware of that. It left her with an uneasy feeling in the pit of her stomach. “Really? It takes like two seconds to send a text.”

“I know. Like I said, he’s busy. I think he’s just going to come home one day and surprise me.”

“You think so? You mean, like, he’s going to wrap up this job and come home for good?”

They approached the mall entrance. Linda opened the door and let Kendra go in first. “Well, ya. Doesn’t that sound like Ray to you?”

“Sure.” And it did, although, with Ray leaving despite Linda’s pregnancy, it seemed he was veering away from his usual behaviour.

“I need maternity pants. “ Linda said, on the lookout for the nearest maternity store. “And probably underwear, too.”

“Same here.” Kendra walked next to her. “I think Thyme Maternity is just around the corner here.” This was the first time shopping for maternity wear for both of them. They managed to stay in their regular clothes up until now.

“Oh, here it is.” They both said in unison.

“So, has Mark like….” Kendra treaded carefully. “put the moves on you or anything?”

Linda frowned and shook her head as she searched through a table filled with maternity pants. Kendra looked as well, but on the other side, for a different colour. “No, not at all.” She guffawed. “Believe me, he’s got enough women in his life.” Linda explained about the various women’s items she’d found in his house previously. “He doesn’t need to hit on me; he can get any woman he wants.
